Unearthing History

2/22 UPDATE:  Due to expected weather conditions, today’s archaeology event has been canceled. We look forward to sharing the findings with the community later this year and appreciate your understanding.

Unearthing History (5)

February 21 & 22: 10 AM- 4 PM

Croft Farm, 100 Bortons Mill Rd

Archaeologists will be on site throughout the weekend conducting active excavations, and the public is invited to observe the dig in progress. Designated times on both Saturday (11 AM) and Sunday (2 PM) will allow visitors to meet the archaeologists, see discoveries up close, and learn how these findings help tell the story of the site.

This is a rare opportunity to witness history being uncovered in real time.

The Kay-Evans property, also known as Croft Farm, is listed in the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places and is significant in the areas of agriculture, architecture, and social history. The property contains intact archaeological deposits associated with 18th- and 19th-century domestic activities and the participation of Quaker abolitionists Thomas and Josiah B. Evans in the Underground Railroad in the 19th century.

Event participants and interested members of the public visiting the park will be offered an opportunity to view the excavations, participate in question and answer sessions, and artifact show and tell with the Principal Investigator and staff archaeologists – including our bioarchaeology/zooarchaeology and geomorphology specialists and an architectural historian. Additional guests such as the Saddler family’s historian, Andrea McDonald, have been invited as well.
