Mayor, Council renew vow to fight development at Woodcrest Country Club

(Cherry Hill, N.J.) – Yesterday, Cherry Hill Township was served with notice that the First Montgomery Group, the new owner of the Woodcrest Country Club property, has filed suit against the Township for the right to build housing on the site. Mayor Chuck Cahn, Township Council President David Fleisher and the members of the Cherry Hill Township Council today issued the following statement in response:

“From day one, the First Montgomery Group has spewed nothing but lies and deceit to the residents of Cherry Hill. Today, the full extent of that deception has come to light.

Less than six months after publicly promising the residents of Cherry Hill that they would continue running Woodcrest as a golf course, this same group wants to instead develop it into 844 housing units.

Let us be clear: We do not and will not support development of any kind on the Woodcrest Country Club property. This has been our stance from the beginning, and it will not change. We will not be threatened into submission.

We are prepared to fight, and to exhaust every avenue at our disposal, to ensure that this landmark in our community is protected and preserved for future generations.

We are outraged by First Montgomery’s disingenuous attempts to move into our community like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, promising at first to “maintain the integrity” of this vast swath of open space because its owners “value[d] Woodcrest Country Club’s historical ties to the community.” We now know that these developers value nothing about the property but dollar signs.

We have made clear from the beginning that we are opposed to development of any kind, and that we would not support any effort to construct residential development on land that is both environmentally sensitive and historically significant to our region.

We have reiterated this position to First Montgomery a number of times, in plain and simple language: We will not allow development on the Woodcrest Country Club property, period.

And while First Montgomery has continuously tried to deceive the public as to its true intentions, we as the Mayor and Council will continue to stand together and fight on every front to protect and preserve one of our community’s largest and last remaining pieces of open space.

Today, we want to send a message to the residents of Cherry Hill – and to the First Montgomery Group and its principals: We will not be swayed or threatened by these school-yard-bully tactics. We will not give up. We will not back down. We will do the right thing for our community's future.”
