Current Guidelines

Preparation of Trash

Trash shall be placed in the 95 gallon, or 64 gallon township-issued green trash cart with handles facing the house. Trash bags and standard trashcans will not longer be used for trash. Prior to placing containers at the collection point, they should be drained of any accumulated water, and the resident should take all possible precautions to protect their trash from insects or other animal intrusions.

Preparation of Bulk Items

Bulk items may be placed out for pickup on your regularly scheduled trash day. Please contact the Department of Public Works at 856-424-4422 the following morning if your bulk items are missed.

Mattresses, box springs, couches, and chairs may be placed curbside for collection on your regularly scheduled collection day, but must have a 4 ft. clearance from the trash cart to allow for the automated arm operation.

Carpet must be cut into 4 foot widths, securely rolled and tied into bundles weighing less than 50 pounds.

Wood must be cut into 4 foot lengths, securely tied into bundles weighing less than 50 pounds. Railroad ties must be cut no longer than 2 feet in length and neatly stacked. Nails or spikes must be removed or bent over to prevent injury.

Latex paint can be disposed of with regular trash, provided it is first dried out by mixing with sand or kitty litter and placed in a plastic bag in the trash cart. Please see how to dry out water based latex paint for more information. Please do not put dried paint cans in the trash cart without first placing them in a plastic bag.

Construction, remodeling, and building materials generated by a private contractor must be removed by the contractor and disposed of properly at an approved disposal site at their cost. This debris is not to be placed curbside for normal residential collection by the township’s waste hauler.

Move-Out collection: The Township will provide a one time courtesy collection for house clean-outs (furniture, carpets, bedding, and similar household items resulting from the sale of a house). Proof of application for a Continued Certificate of Occupancy (CCO) is required prior to scheduling a move-out pickup. These pickups take place on Fridays and must be scheduled in advance. Please call the Department of Public Works if you need to schedule a move-out pickup.

No collection of trash or recyclables will be provided to dwellings under construction, dwellings being remodeled, vacant lots, vacant lands, or those properties without a valid certificate of occupancy.

The township does not provide trash, recyclables and yard waste collection to business, commercial or industrial properties. It is the responsibility of the business owner to make arrangements with a private waste hauler to provide these services.

Single-Stream Recycling

  • Municipal ordinance and State law require that all residents and business located in Cherry Hill recycle
  • All recyclables should be placed in the blue containers
  • Acceptable materials include: glass jars and bottles, aluminum cans, tin cans, plastics numbers 1 and 2, newspaper, white paper, magazines, paperback books, cardboard
  • Unacceptable materials include: coat hangers, pots, pans, plastics numbers 3, 4, 5, 6 AND number 7 ceramics, light bulbs, dishes, mirrors, drinking glasses, antifreeze containers, used oil containers, and syringes
  • Plastic bags should not be placed in your recycle cart. They can be returned to your local grocery store, or brought to Public Works, the Municipal Building, or the Library

Preparation of Recyclable Materials

The township has adopted Single-Stream recycling where mixed paper, cardboard, bottles, cans, and plastics are placed together in the township supplied blue 95-gallon, 64-gallon, or 25-gallon recyclable containers. Loose recyclables placed on the ground alongside of the cart will not be collected by the automated truck, nor will overloaded carts, where the recyclables may fall on the ground during the automated arm operation.

Large pieces of cardboard must be cut up so they fit inside the container. Cardboard jammed into the container could stop the cart from emptying.

Before moving the 95-gallon or 64-gallon cart, grasp the handle and tilt the cart back slightly towards you. Push or pull the cart to the edge of the street. These carts are easy to move, but use care when rolling the cart on slopes, inclines, or steps. Place cart so that the handle and wheels face your home. The container must have a 4-foot clearance around it to be picked up in a safe and proper manner. Do not place the cart near trash containers, mailboxes, parked cars, utility poles, trees or other items that prevent clear access to the cart.

See the Residential Guide to Zero Sort Recycling (PDF) for a complete listing of recyclable items you may place in your bin.

Preparation of Yard Waste

Grass clippings, leaves, vegetative waste from lawns / flower beds, and tree brush must be placed in biodegradable paper bags, open containers, or tied and bundled as applicable. Branches and limbs must be cut into lengths which do not exceed four 4 feet and securely bundled in a manner which does not exceed fifty 50 pounds. Trunks and similar log pieces must be cut to lengths no larger than 2 feet, no thicker than 6" in diameter and no heavier than 50 pounds then neatly stacked curbside for removal. Yard waste labels are available at Public Works and the Clerk’s Office for you to place on your open yard waste containers to help identify them to collection personnel.

Placement of yard waste in plastic bags for collection is prohibited and will not be collected by the township. Yard waste generated by a commercial landscaper will not be collected by the township.

It is recommended that residents consider a "cut it and leave it" program where grass clippings are left on the lawn.
